Cardinal Francis George of the Chicago diocese is telling President Barack Obama and Chicago’s 2.3 million Catholics, by letter:
We cannot – and will not – comply with this unjust <contraception> law.
The letter is going to be read in all Chicago Catholic churches this coming Sunday. Cardinal George takes issue with the president’s requirement for hospitals and universities that are run by the Catholic Church to provide insurance coverage for contraception.
According to the letter obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cardinal has written:
People of faith cannot be made second-class citizens because of their religious beliefs… Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights.
The Cardinal, who has called on the Chicago Catholic community to pray and fast, will simply not honor a program that includes abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception.
Prior to Obama’s release of the contraception plan, the White House was battling over it with alleged denouncements of Obama’s plan from the nation’s top-ranking Catholic in politics, Vice President Joe Biden, and former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley who just resigned from serving Obama in the White House to return to Chicago.
UPDATE: A day after the letter was released, it is reported that the Obama White House is surprised at the strong negative reaction the Obama Health Care's birth-control measure is receiving throughout the country. This being a surprise to the White House is extremely surprising too, given that Obama comes from a very Catholic city - Chicago.
