Chicago Bulls trade rumors now include Taj Gibson as a potential casualty of this season. The latest Chicago Bulls trade rumors also indicate that it could basically be a fire sale to get salary off the books and prepare to go after free agents during the next NBA offseason. According to a report from Friday (Jan. 31), Kirk Hinrich, Mike Dunleavy, Carlos Boozer, and now Gibson are coming up in a lot of discussions with other teams. That could lead to a package deal taking place or several smaller deals before the deadline on Feb. 20.
It might shock some fans that a team currently holding on to the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference might be considering tearing down the current roster. The reality is that the 23-22 team has struggled against the better teams in the league and the front office might not feel that they can actually compete for a title. Dumping Luol Deng on the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum and then simply releasing Bynum showed the mindset of the people in charge. Without Derrick Rose on the court, it seems like they have lost hope at truly competing for the rest of the season.
It's unclear what the team could get in return for any of these players, but Taj Gibson is certainly a talented big man that could help out a lot of teams. They might be able to turn him into a first round pick in the deep 2014 NBA Draft if they chat up the right trade partner. With three weeks left before the deadline to make deals, expect many advance Chicago Bulls trade rumors to surface and for teams making inquiries to be publicly identified. So far the La Lakers, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Bobcats have expressed interest in Gibson, so some deals might already be in the works.
As for why the team might tear things down, there is a chance that both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony hit the free agent market. Both superstars have player options in their current contracts and could decide to leave their current teams. Teaming up with a healthy Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah might be a very enticing offer to one of them. In order to get to that point, though, the team would have to remove Gibson and Carlos Boozer from the roster.
