Chicago, belly fat can be dangerous: Learn ways to lose it

It is a new year and you can’t turn on the television without seeing an ad for some type of weight loss program, but the reality of it all is we need to get rid of the extra belly fat no matter what time of the year it is. Not just because it looks bad, but it is bad for you.

The medical term for belly fat is visceral fat, and carrying fat around the midsection surrounding the internal organs is strongly linked to health issues such as strokes, Type 2 diabetes, and heart attacks. The extra fat in the mid-area releases proteins and hormones that can cause inflammation, which ends up damaging the arteries and enters your liver, affecting how your body breaks down sugars and fats. You have some foods that can contribute to belly fat such as cakes, donuts, ice cream with fudge and other sugary foods. These are the types of foods that can actually be addictive.

Some foods are good for getting rid of belly fat, such as almonds, with healthy fats and fiber that is good for reducing stomach fat. Avocados also have the healthy fats that also help to lower cholesterol. Other healthy foods to add to the diet can to help rid the belly fat are macadamia nuts, walnuts, pistachios and sunflower seeds. Don’t forget other good fats like olive oil and flaxseed oil. Seek recipes with these types of ingredients in replacement of the starchy, sugary, high-calorie foods like donuts, cakes and cookies. Adding nuts to salads can make a filling lunch, or add them to yogurt for a healthy snack.

Exercise is the best way to burn fat and keep it off. It also helps reduce the inflammation in the visceral fat that is linked to metabolic syndrome.
