Chicago beams with special screenings this June and July

The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin’s first feature-length talkie, will be shown at noon on June 1, at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago. The program also includes live musical excerpts from the operatic comedies The Emperor of Atlantis and The Clever One performed by Chicago Opera Theater as well as a discussion with the opera theater’s director Andreas Mitisek and The Second City’s Anne Libera. Music Box will also screen a newly-restored 35mm print of the 1928 silent film Ramona courtesy of the Library of Congress as part of its Second Saturday Silent Cinema series which projects the movies at the proper film speed and aspect ratio, complete with live organ accompaniment by Dennis Scott. The fourth annual Eye on India festival includes film events such as a free 1 p.m. screening of the award-winning 1981 Bollywood classic Umrao Jaan at the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater on 78 E. Washington Street on June 14. Filmmaker Dinesh Sabu will appear in person with his documentary Unbroken Glass at 6:30 p.m. on June 24 at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts on 915 E. 60th Street. The film Patang will be screened after an indoor picnic and prior to a fireside chat with director and Chicago native Prashant Bhargava at 8 p.m. on June 7 at Open Secrets Studio on 401 N.
