Chicago area weather forecast for Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Nothing about Tuesday's forecast looks particularly pleasant, but it may be good for northern Illinois farmers.

Showers and a few thunderstorms will be likely at daybreak Tuesday as a negatively tilted upper-level shortwave moves over the region.  Not only are we expecting things to be wet, but they'll be quite breezy as well with southeast winds at 20-25 mph, making it a little hard to hang onto your umbrella.

The heaviest rainfall looks like it will come south of I-80 where more than 1.3" of rain is possible.  Areas north could still pick up 1" of rain by late Tuesday morning.

The shortwave should start exiting the region as Tuesday morning progresses and will be followed by an accompanying surface low.  The heaviest rain is expected early in the day and as the low moves to our east we'll only look for some lingering showers in the afternoon hours.

With the clouds and the rain our temperatures will remain cool throughout the day Tuesday.  There may be quite a difference in afternoon highs from the northern counties to those in the south.  While highs in Chicago may only reach 60, highs near Kankakee may approach the 70 degree mark.

As a ridge briefly moves over the region we are expecting a quiet and cool night Tuesday night.  A northwest wind won't make things any more comfortable, but we'll be dry.

Heading into Wednesday/Thursday we'll be watching another wave of upper-level energy that is forecast to push a new round of wet weather into the region.  While scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday and Thursday the best chance for rain, with the potential for more heavy rainfall, looks like it will come overnight Wednesday.
