In a vote 43-3, the Chicago City Council approved a measure that would allow Chicago cops to cite people for small amounts of marijuana. The Aldermen votes allow cops to ticket anyone who has at least 15 grams of marijuana instead of arresting them. 15 grams of marijuana is roughly the equivalent of 10 to 15 marijuana cigarettes.
The Aldermen along with Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago’s Police Superintendent support this new ordinance all agreeing that police officers would have more time now focusing on the increase homicide rate, that in comparison to last year is 50 percent higher. The City Council also think that this new source of revenue will help the city with its budget woes. This ordinance does not apply to minors or people without identification, they would still be arrested if caught with marijuana.
