Chia Goodness now at Liberty Market

Liberty Market is selling organic, non-GMO chia seeds. Not for growing on your chia pet (well, you could) but as a tasty and extremely nutrient-dense treat.

Chia Goodness is a new chia seed-based cereal and an excellent source of omega-3s, iron, thiamin, niacin, magnesium, copper and molybdenum, among others.

This gluten-free, cholesterol-free, trans-fat free cereal contains more calcium than a glass of milk, more omega-3s than flaxseeds, and provides ten percent of your daily requirement of iron in only two tablespoons! It is an excellent source of fiber, provides 16% of your recommended daily protein intake, and contains more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon.  This is a low-glycemic, lactose-free cereal, is 88% raw,  requires no cooking, and its kosher.

Package directions say to mix two tablespoons of Chia Goodness with 4 tablespoons hot or cold liquid such as milk, soymilk, or water, and wait 3-5 minutes for the liquid to be absorbed. This basically yields something akin to the consistency of gooey oatmeal. For those of you who are familiar with Chia Pets, you know how gelatinous the seeds become after absorbing water: like the seeds inside of a cut tomato. If you are not a fan of cooked oatmeal, the product is tasty and flavorful and crunchy when sprinkled on top of yogurt or if eaten immediately after pouring a tiny bit of milk or soymilk on top.

One package (five dollars at Liberty) is enough for ten breakfasts. In addition to the chia seeds, the cranberry ginger Chia Goodness that I tried contained buckwheat, hulled hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, currants, cranberries, organic can sugar, ginger, and Celtic sea salt. This is a versatile sort of product, yielding itself to such applications as a crunchy topping for muffins or cupcakes, adding to smoothies or sprinkling over fruit.

You can pick up some Chia Goodness at Liberty Market Saturdays 9-4 and Monday thru Thursday 5-8. Liberty is located at the northwest corner of Woodman Drive and Patterson Road in Kettering.

Allergy Note: Chia Goodness is packaged in a facility that also handles milk, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.
