You're great at sticking to your diet during meals....but when it comes to snacks, you tend to nosh for all the wrong reasons, from boredom to stress. If that sounds familiar, chew on this: Some new studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum can boost your weight loss, reported WebMD recently.
People who chewed gum consumed 68 fewer calories at lunch and did not compensate by eating more later in the day, reported researchers at the University of Rhode Island. They also discovered that chewing gum helped satisfy cravings and boost resistance. In addition, the study participants who chewed gum burned about 5% more calories than non-gum chewers.
In another study, chewing gum controlled the appetite and resulted into lower calorie intake, revealed Louisiana State University researchers. They also found that participants who chewed gum had fewer cravings for snacks.
Bottom line: If you chew gum and thereby reduce your total calorie intake by 100 calories a day, you could boost your weight loss by 10 pounds in a year. Routinely grab gum rather than a snack to see if it satisfies your cravings, and you could lose even more. It also can help you avoid tasting food when you cook and keep your mouth "entertained" while you watch TV.
