The Southern Region Hearing Board of the San Joaquin Valley APCD will meet tomorrow, Feb. 8, and decide whether to grant two more variances to Chevron USA.
Chevron is seeking short variances for four of its oil and gas producing facilities in the Midway Sunset Oilfield:
1. Petition S-12-02S - 26C Oil Cleaning Plant
2. Petition S-12-03S - 2F, 26C, & 31E Oil Cleaning Plants
As mentioned in previous articles (see below), Chevron has sought variance relief for its Kern County facilities numerous times in the past, including facilities in the Midway Sunset Oilfield. A review of the last two years' worth of Hearing Board agendas more likely than not will show at least one Chevron petition listed on each.
Notwithstanding the above, California law and APCD rules allow for regulated industries to seek relief from air pollution regulations. In order to do so, these industries must meet certain requirements and submit a petition to the Hearing Board. The Hearing Board, in turn, must make certain findings in order to approve each variance request.
The hearing will take place at 10 AM in the Southern Region Office Video Teleconference (VTC) Room, 34946 Flyover Court, Bakersfield, CA. Copies of the variance petitions are available for public review by contacting the APCD.
