Chevrolet announces 2010 Camaro gas mileage; retro sports coupe will get up to 29 mpg

The reborn Camaro will compete against the fuel-thirstier Dodge
Challenger and Ford Mustang, priced from $22,995.

The long-awaited 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will beat both the power and the gas mileage of its closest rivals, General Motors said today.

The V6 Camaro will have an EPA rating of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway, and the V8 model will get 16 in the city and 25 on the highway, with the automatic transmission.

The standard manual transmission slightly lowers each engine's gas mileage, presumably the result of gearing designed to optimize acceleration rather than minimize fuel consumption.

However, the upcoming Camaro will be the fuel-efficient choice among the Big Three's retro coupes when it goes on sale this spring.

Despite its 304 standard horsepower, the base 3.6-liter V6 Camaro's mileage ratings beat the 18 city/26 highway of the manual V6 version of the upcoming 2010 Ford Mustang (its automatic is even worse) and the 17 city/25 highway of the automatic-only V6 Dodge Challenger. The Dodge makes 250 horsepower; the Ford 210.

The Camaro V6's fuel economy beats many V6-powered midsize family sedans, including Chevrolet's Malibu, though those are front- instead of rear-wheel-drive and have less power.

The V8 Camaro, too, does well for a coupe with a large engine; its 6.2-liter V8 offers a whopping 426 horsepower (400 with the automatic transmission), but it still beats 325-horsepower Mustang's fuel economy ratings of 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway and is even with the 372-horsepower Challenger.

The V6 Camaro will start at $22,995; the V8 at $30,995.

Update: The Camaro is officially on sale today (3/17), though expect most of the first cars to fulfill pre-orders.

Confession: I had an IROC Z28 in H.S. 29MPG has come a long way! Sure glad this is anonymous. :)

Sounds very promising and looks impressive too. I'll be excited to see 0-60, 0-100-0, and other numbers soon so we can start to see how it compares to the others.
