According to the International Ski Federation website on Friday, Rowan Cheshire of Great Britain won her first World Cup halfpipe skiing competition of her career at Calgary's Canada Olympic Park on Friday.

Cheshire posted a score of 80.40 points. The 18 year-old from the town of Crewe, England was the only halfpipe skier to break the 80 point barrier on Friday. Prior to her World Cup gold medal, Cheshire's greatest accomplishment to date was winning a bronze medal at the 2013 World Junior Skiing Championships in Chiesa, Italy.

Virgine Faivre of Switzerland won the silver medal and Amy Sheehan of Australia won the bronze medal. The victory by Cheshire is significant because it comes just over a month away from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Cheshire is very excited to be an Olympic medal hopeful for Great Britain and represent her native country that does not have a rich history at the Winter Olympics.

"It means the world to me. Even growing up, the Olympics were on the TV, and everything. You watch the TV, and the Olympics are the main thing. Everybody's like 'oh, my God', the Olympics, the Olympics. It's a big thing."

Still, Cheshire finds it a little intimidating that she is competing against the best in the world.

"Yeah, it's kind of scary competing against all of the top athletes. But hopefully if I can train my best, I can be near the top by the Olympics."
