Cheryl Cole's quickie marriage to Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini has led to speculation that she might be pregnant. According to the Daily Mail, speculation heated up even further when fitness trainer Curtis Brown, a friend of Cheryl's husband Jean-Bernard said in a recorded interview: "Don't get mad at me, but your baby mama is hot," Curtis said. "She's very gorgeous. She is a great singer. She's awesome."
Added fuel to the pregancy speculation: Nadine Coyle (who used to be in Girls Aloud with Cole) tweeted: "Aww @CherylOfficial you must be having an amazing time. I am so happy for you! Good luck with everything. Come join the baby club. Best ever." Cole replied with three emoticons representing kisses.
Meanwhile, The Sun has reported that the marriage not be legal due to questions about Fernandez-Versini's last name.
On July 13, 2014, the same day that British tabloids reported that Cole and Fernandez-Versini had marriage plans, Cole announced that the couple had already gotten married. On her official Instagram account, Cole posted a photo closeup of her engagement ring and wedding ring on her left hand, with this accompanying message: "I usually do not discuss my personal life but to stop the speculation I want to share my happy news... Jean-Bernard and I married on 7/7/14."
Just hours before Cole made the announcement, The Sun reported that she and Fernandez-Versini had eloped. According to the Daily Mirror, the couple got married in the Caribbean island of Mustique, and only four guests attended the wedding, which was a ceremony that lasted about 30 minutes. Two of the wedding guests were Cole's mother Joan Callaghan and Cole's personal assistant Lily England.
Officials at the Caribbean Births, Marriages and Deaths Department in Kingstown say that the groom's name on the marriage certificate is Jean-Bernard Justin Antoine Aime Bastien Thierry. A clerk from the office told The Sun: "We need to know the spelling of his names before we can process the documents and register the marriage."
Meanwhile, Pastor Devon R. Ollivierre, who officiated the marriage ceremony, gave an interview to the Daily Mirror. Ollivierre said, “They seemed very in love, the atmosphere was incredibly captivating, even if I didn’t know who she was. It was like a church ceremony on the beach. They seemed very in love the way they were reacting in front of me. The vows were short and at the end of the ceremony they kissed, there was a lot of passion.
“After the wedding, Cheryl said she had a great time. But there was no singing. I came to understand she was a singer but I didn’t know who she was. She told me she just wanted something modest. All the things about God were in the ceremony, they didn’t ask to take anything out. They would say what I asked them to repeat – and at the end of the service, they said, ‘So help me God.’
“There is a part where you bless the bride and groom. I touched their foreheads with my finger and prayed. I am not concerned about people being famous or not famous, I am just concerned about people being married and staying together. I love to know the weddings I do are for that. It was a very special day.”
Ollivierre, who lives in Bequia, added: “I did not stay for the reception. Normally I just go for the ceremony and then I leave, even if I have been invited to stay. I have done a lot of weddings, I’ve been doing it for about more than 20 years. But I have not done many weddings in Mustique. This was special.”
In June 2014, the Sunday People reported that things were getting serious between Cole (who is 31) and Fernandez-Versini (who is 33), because she had moved Fernandez-Versini into her home in Hertfordshire, England, just two months after the couple began dating.
An unnamed source told the Sunday People: “Jean-Bernard was based in France, he has work over there. But he’s now living happily with Cheryl. It’s all going so well. Cheryl is totally in love and the happiest she has been in a long time. They just click and Jean makes her laugh.
“Cheryl has to be in England for 'The X Factor,' so it seemed the perfect solution for her to move him in. She jokes that she rattles around in her house on her own. She definitely deserves some luck in her love life. It hasn’t exactly been easy for her over the past few years. It’s no secret she wants to settle down and have a family. Maybe this will be her chance.”
Cole and Fernandez-Versini (who owns the restaurant Cosy Box) met through mutual friends and began dating in April 2014, according to the Sunday People. In May 2014, Cole and Fernandez-Versini went public with their romance at the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France.
Cole was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. from 2008 to 2010. She was briefly a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2011 but she was notoriously fired in May of that year after just a few weeks on the job. At the time, "X Factor" creator/executive producer told the media that he took "full responsibility" for firing Cole. She rejoined "The X Factor" U.K. judging panel in 2014. Cole, Cowell, Louis Walsh and Mel B are all judges on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2014.
Fernandez-Versini is the latest in a series of high-profile romances that Cole has had since she found fame in 2002 as a member of Girls Aloud. She was married to soccer player Ashley Cole from 2006 to 2010. After her split from Ashley, she dated dancer Derek Hough from late 2010 to early 2011, but she never publicly admitted that they were a couple.
Cheryl and Ashley Cole got back together (but did not remarry) for about six months in 2011, but by October of that year, they had split up for good. Cheryl then dated her backup dancer Tre Holloway from 2012 to 2013.
Cheryl detailed her troubled marriage in her 2012 memoir "Cheryl: My Story." In the book she confirmed tabloid reports that the marriage was ruined because Ashley cheated on her many times. Before the former spouses officially divorced, several women gave tabloid interviews saying that they had affairs with Ashley while he was married to Cheryl.
In her memoir, Cheryl also detailed her "X Factor" experiences and described Cowell as a selfish and manipulative boss who fired her from the American "X Factor" because she turned down his request to go back to being a judge on the British "X Factor." Cheryl said she considered her firing a betrayal since she didn't see it coming and because Cowell (whom she considered to be a close friend at the time) did not have the courage to tell her himself. She refused to communicate with him for about five months after she was fired, but she reached a tentative truce with Cowell in October 2011 and began communicating with him again.
In 2012, she sued "The X Factor" U.S. for $2.3 million (or £1.4 million) for breach of contract, which included unpaid salary and other expenses. The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2013. Terms of the settlement were not publicly disclosed.
For years after her firing, Cheryl that she never wanted to be an "X Factor" judge or work with Cowell again. She also repeated this vow in her memoir, in numerous interviews and on social media. Obviously, she changed her mind.
Cheryl's fourth solo album is expected to be released in 2014. The album's title and release date are to be announced. The album's first single is "Crazy Stupid Love," which is set for release in the U.K. and Ireland on July 20, 2014. Undoubtedly one of the reasons why she went back to "The X Factor" (besides her reported £1.5 million salary, which equals $2.55 million in U.S. dollars) is so that she can use the show as a platform to promote this album.
July 19, 2014 update: The Sunday People is reporting that Cheryl and Fernandez-Versini actually met each other in the summer of 2013 but didn't begin dating each other in March 2014. And according to the Daily Mirror, the newlyweds are looking for a new home in London and want to have a second marriage ceremony in London that will have more guests (about 80 people) than their Mustique wedding.
An unnamed source told the Sunday People: "When Cheryl and JB were seen together in Cannes in May it was their first public outing. It was the first time Cheryl was ready to do it. They met about this time last year though they didn’t really get to know one another well. They didn’t start dating until earlier this year. Cheryl has taken her private life away from the limelight, she has been going to South Africa for a few years now after she met Janine and they became incredibly close.
"She and JB enjoyed a special time over Christmas. There is no way that Cheryl would ever flaunt someone she had just met in the glare of publicity. She wanted to keep this quiet until she knew things had a chance of working out. Now she is delighted to be seen with him.”
The source added, “JB loves the UK, since getting together with Cheryl he has spent a lot of time here, he has got to know her friends and her work colleagues really well. They both now want a home that is theirs rather than it being what she chose four years ago. Her life has changed it has moved on. She is so much more comfortable. The roller coaster is over for her now, things are settled and far more simple. It is not going to be how it used to be. She’s learned from her past.”
As for the couple's second marriage ceremony in London, an unnamed "friend" of Cheryl's told the Daily Mirror: "Cheryl and Jean-Bernard took everyone by surprise when they announced they were married. A lot of her family haven’t even met the guy, and some were upset about missing the big day. So they want to do something to make up for things. It will also be a great opportunity for family and friends of both sides to get to know each other. The couple could have done it later in the year, but they want all their loved ones to share their happiness as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, Cheryl reportedly had this to say about her pregnancy plans, according to the Daily Mirror: “If it happens, it happens. We’ll see. It’s not in me plans.”
