UK pop sensation Cher Lloyd took some time out of her busy rehearsal schedule to talk about the upcoming ‘I Wish’ Tour, working with US X-Factor quintet Fifth Harmony, being friends with the X-Factor’s Demi Lovato, being invited on stage on a stop on Taylor Swift’s Red tour and tattoos. Lloyd’s tour kicks off September 6, at the Fillmore in Silver Spring Maryland.
It was late morning and the first night of the tour was rapidly approaching and Cher admitted that she was very nervous.
On preparation for the tour I have had two rehearsal days and what happened it’s quite funny actually, I had two rehearsal days and I had to shoot the video yesterday for ‘I Wish’ and that went on all day into the early hours around 3 am, and then I got up and flew here. It’s kind of been crazy so It’s made me a lot more nervous to be performing tonight.
On the ‘I Wish’ Tour
It’s going to be very different It’s going to be a different experience for my fans, they’re going to get to hear some brand new songs, that I have never, ever performed before, and have never, ever been heard before either, you know there’s a lot of ups and downs throughout the set you know, there’s going to be some songs that you could easily cry to and some songs that you could dance so much that your feet hurt, so it’s a very, very unique set list I really hope and I think that people are gonna thoroughly enjoy themselves.
I’m going to do a little acoustic set and what I wanted from this tour was to have it feel intimate and to have it feel like the fans were so close to me that they can almost touch me. And that’s really what I wanted for this tour and I think it’s much nicer to involve everyone and make the atmosphere feel really good.
On touring with Fifth Harmony
It’s been really nice to invite them on and I feel like they are such lovely girls and they have a brilliant career ahead of them it’s very difficult getting onto the show, I think it’s great that they are coming along because I feel like I know exactly what they have been through and I know exactly how it feels to release a first single and the nerves and the pressure around it, It’s going to be nice to spend some time with them and really get to know them as individuals you know because being in a band it’s quite difficult to know each individual person, it’s gonna be real nice to get to know them.
On the’ I Wish’ single
It’s been very exciting I recorded the song in Sweden, and that’s basically where I record most of my songs, it’s very, very cold, I was actually sick at the time, I wasn’t feeling too good and I had a bit of a cold and I was a bit down and I went into the studio with Shellback who’s producing the album and he lifted my spirits and I recorded the song and I absolutely love it I feel that it has a really strong message, and that message is to understand that, everybody has flaws, and everyone has something that they’re not quite happy with and at the end of the day you’ve got to embrace who you are and feel good to be you.
On the line in ‘I Wish’ ‘I Wish I Woke Up with a Butt and a Rack’
That was me being very open and honest a lot of girls wish for that and I do too and I’m not afraid to say it I mean ok I do wish I had that but in saying that I don’t think I’m gonna change who I am because I want that you know, I’m ok, I’m ok with how I am, I have days where I’m like ‘Oh’ I really gotta look cuter today, and I’m not feeling too happy about the way I look, but every girl has those days the song is about being open and honest and really getting my message out there.
On her relationship with Demi Lovato
I performed on the X-Factor US I think it was last year, and I had a great experience it was really good to be on stage but then I got invited to go and meet her in her dressing room and I really just got the sense that she is really down to earth and really lovely, and we had such a good time and she is really funny.
Then a couple weeks after, she had said that she had a new song, and that she would love to feature me on it so I went straight into the studio and we actually recorded the song while I was on Skype to her and I got some feedback on the lyrics that I wrote and she really loved them and it kinda went on from that, really it’s good to have a friendship with someone that’s in the business too and it’s really good to get advice from her, and really understand things you know, that I don’t understand, because she’s been there, she’s such a sweet girl and I look forward to maybe working with her again.
I think it’s really important when applying ink to your skin that’s gonna last forever for it to mean something I mean there’s not much point for me to do them all over my body for it to last a lifetime and the look at it and think, we’ll why did I do that, and I feel like tattoos have kinda got a bad rep and I feel really strongly that they shouldn’t; I mean it’s up to an individual to do what they want to their body but me personally I just feel like, every tattoo that I have has a meaning, and I’m happy to have them, I have no regrets.
But the one thing that I would say, just because I know I have such a young fan base, is first of all, you need to be old enough to get a tattoo and talk to someone about it and figure out whether it’s a good idea to do that and understand that it’s gonna be there forever, and if it means something to you, I say go ahead and do it.
On teens today
It’s really difficult for young people at the moment I think there’s so many different opinions out there, and certain ways to look, and that’s really been my message from day one, and it will always be my message just be who you wanna be.
On performing with Taylor Swift
It was kinda of surreal really, I couldn’t believe that I had been invited, I couldn’t believe that she loved the song so much, and it was so nice to have that opportunity to be in front of so many people, I mean I’m on my tour right now, the crowd isn’t as big as Taylor’s crowd and it was just so amazing to experience that for three minutes I really appreciate that, I can’t really thank her enough.
She really did do something that made me feel really, really good, so I’m really grateful to her for letting me have that opportunity. The crowd seemed to really enjoy it and she really did get them out there, and when I came out I really felt the crowd warming to me.
She’s a very powerful artist, she really is, and she really knows how to treat her fans right and that’s something also that I really respect about her, is that she really understands her fans and she loves them and hopefully my fans feel the same way about me, because this is what it’s all about it’s about, making people happy and when you see them happy about the art that you are giving out.
On the upcoming album
On this next album I didn’t want it to be taken over by features but in saying that I’m not gonna say that there’s gonna be no features because obviously I have the new single with T.I. this album is more about, people who understand exactly who I am, and as I said I got some songs that you can cry too, and some that you can dance so much that your feet hurt, I’m not gonna say that there are features, but I’m working on a few things right now, so it’s very exciting.
