Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, has been making music either with her late ex-husband Sonny Bono or on her own since the early Sixties. Sonny and Cher first hit it big way back in 1965 with their second album, Look at Us. The release hit #2 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 13 million copies. Superstardom followed for both, based largely on the success of the album's single "I Got You Babe", which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sonny and Cher's fame expanded to television in the Seventies and even outlasted their marriage.

After an ugly divorce and a fling with music mogul David Geffen, Cher married Gregg Allman. Though she filed for divorce from Allman after just nine days, the two stayed married for close to four years. The album they recorded together, Two the Hard Way, was a huge failure, and Cher soon realized that she was best on her own.

By the Eighties, Cher had remade herself as a multi-platinum solo artist, a successful actress, and a role model for other females in the entertainment industry. Though she is nicknamed the "Goddess of Pop", Cher's list of awards extends well past pop music. She has sold over 140 million albums, won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival, and she is the only recording artist to have a #1 single in each of the past six decades. Cher has racked up 33 Top 10 hits over the years, including 15 #1 singles. She released her latest album, Closer to the Truth, last September and watched it soar to #3 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of a #1 single and two #2 singles on the Dance/Club chart. Not bad for someone who turned 68 in May, huh?

The diva's opener is no slouch either. Cyndi Lauper has won Grammy, Emmy, MTV VMA, Billboard, AMA, and Tony Awards and is a New York Times Best Selling author. Lauper's 1983 debut album She's So Unusual sold over 22 million copies worldwide. She has fifteen Top 10 singles and five #1's to her credit (six if you count her participation in "We Are the World").
