Chemical plant & system operators - career description and outlook

Chemical plant & system operators control or operate an entire chemical process or system of machines.

This occupation is employed in several Pennsylvania industries, and has been identified as high priority in the Advanced Materials & Diversified Manufacturing targeted industry cluster.

Nature of the Work:

Chemical plant & system operators run the machines and control the processes used when making chemicals.

Chemical plant operators monitor all steps of the production process. They make sure the proper amount of each ingredient is mixed together. They take samples to inspect the quality of what is being produced. They use industry standards to evaluate samples. If there is a problem with the product, chemical plant operators determine what is wrong and fix it.

Chemical plant operators inspect equipment for safety problems, leaks, or wear. They look for problems that may require stopping production to make repairs. If there is an emergency, operators shut down the machines following their supervisors' instructions.

In addition, operators have administrative duties. They record the amount of chemicals used and the amount of product created. They also record their findings when they take samples. If materials are being used faster than expected, they may order new supplies.
