Chelsea sign Demba Ba for £7 million from Newcastle United

Chelsea made their opening moves of the January transfer window on Jan. 2, 2013 as they sold Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool and signed Demba Ba from Newcastle for a profit of £5 million in the process according to the Telegraph.

The Blues have been looking for a striker to challenge Fernando Torres for a first team place. Daniel Sturridge was never truly allowed that chance after the departure of Andre Villas-Boas and his inability to see regular action under both Roberto Di Matteo and now Rafael Benitez proved that his move was more of writing on the wall.

Demba Ba has been in excellent form for the past few seasons having burst onto the scene with West Ham before his move to Newcastle United. Now with his low priced release clause having been met, Chelsea will either enjoy a major steal in the EPL or rue the day that they let a talented young attacker leave before he was truly given his chance to shine.

Newcastle will face an interesting fight to replace their leading scorer with 13 goals in the EPL and in the top five of the league scoring charts, and it will be a massive make or break moment for the club with the remaining 29 days of the transfer window sure to see the Magpies fans squirming to see who will be brought in to fill the void.
