August 26th will Be Chelsea Handler's last day as a late night host with E!, the network announced today. Handler told The Hollywood Reporter, “I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years. I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I'm glad I went." Chelsea Lately has been on the air for seven years now, and despite rumors that the television personality would be taking over for another late night host such as Craig Ferguson or David Letterman, we have yet to see Chelsea sign any new deals. It is also rumored that Chelsea is in talks with the streaming service, Netflix.
Handler first announced her departure back in March, following an appearance on Howard Stern, where she called the E! network, "a sad, sad place to live." E! does not seem bitter about their relationship with the host as president Suzanne Kolb said in a statement, “We are very proud of Chelsea Lately’s long-running success and the unique space that the series carved out in late night television. Chelsea brought a distinct voice to late night with her acerbic wit and fearless commentary, and we look forward to providing fans with a memorable send-off that lives up to that tradition. Most of all, we are grateful to the Chelsea Lately team for making this show so special for seven years.”
Handler's ratings are past their peak, but still bring the E! network a flair it might not have otherwise. Chelsea's contract is actually valid through the end of 2014, but she has apparently reached a deal with the network to cut the cord early on her end. What could be next for Handler? With books, a plethora of celebrity friends, and natural wit, there's so many places Chelsea could end up.
