Chelsea Handler quits show: Leaving 'Chelsea Lately' after 8 years on E!

Chelsea Handler will leave the E! network and her "Chelsea Lately" weeknight show when her contract expires at the end of this year. This will bring a close to her late-night talk show after eight years her manager Irving Azoff tells The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday, March 30.

Handler has often been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the E! network, though such complaints are usually viewed as part of a contract renegotiation.

But in this case, Azoff tells the Reporter, "Chelsea intends to leave when her contract expires. She hired me to figure out her life after E! We have at least seven suitors and many ideas."

He also adds that future plans for Handler could include a radio presence and perhaps another nightly or weekly late-night show on another network or digital provider.

As for E!, a spokesperson stated to THR, "Chelsea has nine months left on her contract and E! will not comment on the future of Chelsea Lately at this time."

Supposedly Chelsea Handler feels she is at the top of her game with a new book, "Uganda be Kidding Me", sitting at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for over a week.

She is in the middle of a tour of more than 30 cities that will also include dates overseas, according to Geof Wills, president of Live Nation Comedy. And she will tape her first stand-up special in Chicago in June to air on cable this October.

A source at one of the companies said to be interested in signing Handler admitted they didn't know if she'd be able to earn as much as she's currently making at E!. Chelsea reportedly earns $9 million per year there.

Handler has been typically vocal about her frustration with programming at E! At a March 5 appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show, she described the cable network as, "a sad, sad place to live," adding, "They don’t know what they’re doing. They have no ideas. It’s a failure."

A source at another company supposedly slated to meet with Handler says those kind of public remarks might make potential suitors think twice.
