Chelsea Handler is poised to replace Craig Ferguson who's filling in after David Letterman retired from the "Late Show." The photo TMZ published April 15 was taken from Handler's Instagram in which it shows her sitting with her dog on her lap while she's holding a booklet with a CBS logo on the page.
Is Handler teasing fans that she could be the new comedienne to take over Letterman's show? According to a caption she posted with the image, she wrote that she met with CBS in a "business meeting."
Several reports, including one from Gossip Girls, also write that Chelsea Handler taking over Ferguson's position is just a rumor for now. It's a fairly strong rumor, however.
Handler's manager, Irving Azoff, told The Hollywood Reporter in late March that she intends to leave when her contract expires on E! He added that Handler has "at least seven suitors and many ideas.”
Azoff indicated that Handler's new career path could be a "radio presence" and a possible "nightly or weekly late-night show on another network or digital service."
Late-night television has a roster dominated by men. If Chelsea Handler signs on with CBS for the "The Late Late Show," she'll be the first female host on late-night comedy television. It would be a groundbreaking career move and possibly a ratings bonanza for the network.
It would be interesting to see how well Chelsea Handler does with the viewers if she does replace Craig Ferguson. In some ways it's quite a risk and in other ways it seems like a smart choice for the network. Who would you like to see on "The Late Late Show"?
