Chef Rocco DiSpirito dishes up Pound a Day diet: Celebrities eat it up

Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito knows how to whip up wonderful meals. But he's also become an expert at crafting recipes designed to tantalize your taste buds while helping you win at weight loss, combining them with a diet that celebrities are championing, reported Voxxi on July 18.

Rocco says that the diet helped him lose more than 50 pounds. Among the stars who are using his weight loss plan is Whoopi Goldberg, who recently told Dr. Mehmet Oz that she used it to shed 30 pounds.

Entitled "The Pound a Day Diet: Lose Up to 5 Pounds in 5 Days by Eating the Foods You Love," the book combines Mediterranean-style eating with low carb guidelines. Rocco feels that the fact that he's a chef gives him a unique edge on weight loss.

"It’s a chef’s point of view that’s been missing in the world of health," declared Rocco. "I am surrounded by the most delicious food available on the planet every day of my life. And if I can do it, anyone can do it."

Rocco also has appeared on "Extreme Weight Loss" to help contestants learn to shed weight successfully without feeling deprived, as well as "The View." He's proud of his celebrity weight loss success stories. "Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg have both lost over 30 pounds, Paul Stanley has incredible abs."

During the first phase of the plan, dieters consume 850 calories on weekdays and 1,200 calories per day on Saturday and Sunday. The second phase provides a more lenient weight loss plan.

Although some have questioned the "Pound a Day" approach because of its low calorie content, celebrity trainer Chris Powell is a fan. He recently appeared on "The View" to talk about his show, "Extreme Weight Loss," and complimented Rocco for his contributions in guiding participants to transform their attitudes toward food.

Many experts recommend that dieters on rapid weight loss plans with restricted calories do so only under the supervision of a physician. "Extreme Weight Loss," while still utilizing Rocco's expertise, has changed its approach this year and has the show's participants spend the first 90 days at the University of Denver’s Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.

The next episode of "Extreme Weight Loss" features a woman who needs to lose half of her body weight in order to achieve a healthy body mass index (BMI). She weighed 315 pounds at the beginning of her weight loss journey, reported Tulsa World on July 20.

Like many people with a lot of weight to lose, Georgeanna Johnson felt "desperate. I didn't know what to do and I was completely overwhelmed," she said.

In accordance with the new plan, she spent the first three months of her time on the show at the health and wellness center so her food and fitness could be carefully supervised. "It kind of takes both (exercise and diet) to get that kind of success," Georgeanna said of her extreme weight loss success.

She noted that Rocco appears on the episode. He offers her guidance on how to make a healthy dessert. Try one of the recipes from his "Pound a Day" diet book below.

High-protein Chocolate Smoothie ingredients

  • 6 cups cold water
  • 2 scoops fiber powder
  • 2 scoops protein powder
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons dark unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 24 packets monk fruit extract (optional)
  • 4 scoops unflavored egg-white powder
  • 2 cups crushed ice or small ice cubes

Directions

1. Put the water and fiber powder in a blender and blend on high until smooth and slightly thickened, about1 1/2 minutes. Turn the blender off and add the protein powder and the cocoa (and monk fruit if using); blend until smooth, about 30 seconds, and turn off the blender.

2. Add the egg-white powder and blend until smooth, about 10 seconds, then add the ice and blend until smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour the smoothie into four pint-sized glasses.

Hot Tip: Add a pinch of salt if your diet can afford the sodium -- it will really draw out the full flavor of the cocoa.
