Chef Liam Mackey, until recently the highly praised Chef de Cuisine at The Pearl has announced that he is leaving the Pearl to open a new restaurant, “The Nautilus” at 12 Cambridge St, where 12 Degrees East formerly resided. Before that, the space was occupied by Cambridge St, a popular, low key barbecued rib emporium. This was originally reported in the Inquirer and Mirror.
Mackey will be joined in this new partnership by colleagues Stephen Bowler, who was wine director and sommelier at the Pearl and Boarding House, and Clinton Terry, formerly the bar manager at the Pearl, Boarding House and Corazon Del Mar, all properties run by Seth and Angela Raynor.
Mackey has been known for his sophisticated seafood and Asian leaning menu at The Pearl, and The Nautilus will certainly offer some food with an Asian and Thai flair as well as sashimi.
12 Degrees East, run by Jonas Baker lasted two years, and last summer reduced its footprint to half of the space, and reduced their menu accordingly. Baker also manages the well-regarded Slip 14 on the Old South Wharf, which continues to delight. The Nautilus is billed as a 53-seat restaurant, presumably occupying both halves of that space.
The Raynors have not only provided 3 popular restaurants on Nantucket for some years, but have given several chefs the chance to go on and open their own places. Two years ago, Chef Erin Zircher along with Jane Stoddard and Carlos Hidalgo left the Raynors to open Cru Oyster Bar at the site of the former Ropewalk.
