Cheetos lead police to burglary suspect

A note for all would-be robbers: If you break into a convenience store, don't open any bags of Cheetos until you get home. That's the lesson 19-year-old Austin Lee Westfall Presler learned from police on Jan. 6.

Presler, a South Carolina native, broke into the Cassatt Country Store by smashing in the front window. Presler loaded up on beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, and snack food, including a bag of Cheetos he opened while in the store.

The subsequent investigation by police did not take long.

The surveillance tapes showed the suspect making his way through the store and fleeing in a white vehicle. Presler's face was obscured during the video. Presler did make one critical mistake.

The opened bag of Cheetos left a trail leading from the store to Presler's home. Police followed the Cheetos trail to the stolen merchandise and a white vehicle in the driveway. Police arrested Presler for second-degree burglary.

Presler was released on bond.
