Central High School cheerleaders in Bridgeport Connecticut are creating a national stir by complaining about skimpy cheerleading uniforms. Across the nation, cheerleaders are seen year round in midriff baring lycra. One teen team thinks the uniforms are too sexy. They returned the skimpy skirts and rallied around the cause.
The high school cheerleaders cited the National Federation Spirit Rules book. They claim that the uniforms violate league rules regarding a bare midriff. Team members also complained that tops were too tight and skirts were too short. The skimpy uniforms were returned. One cheerleader, in uniform, told the Bridgeport Board of Education,
"I am embarrassed to stand up here dressed like this."
The cheerleaders spoke at a Bridgeport Board of Education meeting after returning the skimpy skirts and tops, but before receiving all of the replacement pieces. Team Captain, Heidi Medina, is skeptical of the replacement skirts. One Connecticut school official said many schools purchase black body suits to be worn under uniforms.
The Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools, Denise Clemons, claimed she was unaware of the dress code rules regarding bare midriffs. Clemons also claimed that the girls' sizes may have increased since the uniforms were ordered. She says that may have accounted for the tight fit.
Cheerleaders have long been associated with precision drills, pony tails, and pleated mini-skirts. The Central High cheerleaders are questioning a tradition that may need some contemporary spin. Are cheerleaders' athletic uniforms decidedly un-athletic? At $77 bucks a pop maybe the uniforms should offer a little more performance and little less skin.
High school cheerleaders in Connecticut are refusing the skimpy cheerleading uniforms they received. The uniforms violate league rules. According to the cheerleaders, they are too revealing and embarrassing. The topic is catching a lot of buzz. Many schools send students home for a bare midriffs. Some of these same schools order cheerleading uniforms that violate those rules.

What adult approved uniforms as such? That individual needs to be fired, especially when she makes comments that negate the students concerns. I think her name is Denise Clemmons - she needs to be fired immediately for her refusal to fix the problem without hesitation.
