In a move that should surprise no one, The Ottawa Senators bought out the final year on Jonathan Cheechoo's contract on Tuesday.
Ottawa General Manager Bryan Murray made it sound as if the split was mutual, in his statement on the matter.
"Jonathan is a quality person and hockey player," he said in a press release. "We hoped that things would have worked out with the Senators. In the best interest of us both, we have decided to move on. We wish him all the best."
Cheechoo, 29, played in 61 games with the Senators in 2009-10, registering five goals, nine assists and 20 penalty minutes. He did not record a point in his one playoff meeting against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 20. Assigned to the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on Feb. 13, Cheechoo had eight goals, six assists and 37 penalty minutes in 25 games.
Cheechoo was the biggest name Ottawa got in return in the deal that sent Dany Heatley to San Jose. He was scheduled to make a hefty 3.5 million in the upcoming season and the big club was just not willing to continue to pay him that kind of money to play in Binghamton.
