Cheech And Chong made a name for themselves playing two stoners in several movies. Their comedy records have sold millions and they have become legends. Last night,October 27 they played a show at the Keswick Theater in Glenside Pa. They brought out most of their classic bits.
That is what the crowd came to hear. However, they put a 2013 spin on them. For example when they did "Born in the USA", Chong played an immigration man and asked Cheech who the president is. When he responded B Rock Your Mama,,he got busted and they broke into a Mexican dance.
Chong also played a cop turned Home Depo Security Guard during their rendition of "Dave". Tommy Chong's wife, Shelby played an integral part of the show, taking audience questions after a brief stand up act of her own. Much of the questions were about how they came together. "I was high and shoplifted cantaloupe in Vancouver. i cut them in half and thought they would make good shoes" she said. Cheech said that he was not in Canada dodging the draft, but protecting America via any attack that would come through Vancouver.
The fans want to hear the old bits, and the due did some of them. Pedro and Man got into so many misadventures back in the 70's, it was impossible to play them all. However, they did go cruisin.and of course, they got pulled over and they were high.
In the1970's people could get arrested for a joint. Today, Marijuana is legal in several states and there is a push to legalize it nationwide. A cause the two of them are very much behind. Chong admits he has a Medical marijuana card". He uses it for a battle with prostate cancer. "I;m still paranoid about smoking it in my own house",he said.
One funny incident is when they were filming the "Nice Dreams" movie and they had a trailer of Marijuana plants . "We used the LAPD to guard it" they joked during the show.
They played some of the songs they are famous for, such as "Basketball Jones' and "Earache My Eye". They said when they went looking for a record contract they needed a tape recorder and a thousand dollars. Then Cheech cut in, "Hey, there is two of us. and got another grand".
The show at the Keswick was funny. With the addition of Shelby and Paris Chong, they should stretch out the show for several hours. Someone should give them another couple grand and a tape recorder for some new material that they can incorporate into their future shows , to make them even longer.
