Unveiled yesterday, the new 6th Generation iPod Nano is a touchable mini-mp3 player that lets you swipe and scroll through your media.  Called "cute" and "touchable" by Apple, the complete redesign on the new Nano is breathing truth into the rumor that Apple will eventually take multi-touch and lend it to all of its MP3 players from here on out.

The 6th Gen iPod Nano itself looks sleek and futuristic.  Encased in anodized aluminum, the Nano is available in seven different colors ranging from standard stainless-steel to bright pink and tangerine orange.  Apple also seems to be merging the most consumer-friendly aspects of its current iPods by giving the Nano the "clip-and-go" treatment that has made the shuffle so popular in the past.  Clip the Nano to your shirt, jacket, bag, face, dog . . . whatever object you want to continually prod with your finger to find your tunes.

Perhaps the biggest innovation for the new iPod Nano is the ability to listen to FM radio and set favorite stations (who knew we'd ever be cycling BACK to radio on the go?).  The Nano will read the station identification and song stats and display them readily on-screen.  Particularly interesting, the Nano lets you pause live radio . . . like a DVR for your pop-indulgence.  Tap to pause a song or show, tap again to resume, and you can even rewind up to 15 minutes of broadcast to find a specific spot.  Wow.

The new 6th Gen Nano will also boast Genius lists and "shakeable shuffle", which is nothing new to the iPod software, although Apple seems to be advertising these features heavily.

The new iPod Nano begins shipping in one week and the 8G has a price tag of $149, while the 16GB is only $30 more, coming in at $179 at the Apple Store Online.

Pros:

  • Multi-touch at an affordable price
  • Listen to, pause, and rewind FM Radio
  • Clip the Nano wherever you like, perfect for running, going to class, etc.
  • Extremely bright, clear, 240x240px screen
  • Long battery life (although yet to be tested), touted at lasting "24 hours on one charge

Cons:

  • Conceivably the cons, at first glance, would be the limited ability of touching a small, 1.5-inch display.  Gorilla-hands need not apply.

The Nano 6G is just a Shuffle posing as a Nano... ewww

    * Good: Not Much
    * Bad: Downgrade of the Nano

The Nano 6G should be called the new Shuffle, period. I am a happy owner of the
Nano 5G and if Apple quits making the Nano 5G, then they lose business and sales.
So sad if Apple would do this... So go for it Apple and meet your own demise.

I own along with my family every model of the Ipod except for the Nano 6G and
honestly might want one just to replace a Shuffle. If I had to replace Nano 5G with a
Nano 6G, I would just rather buy another BRAND (if one existed) Long live the 5G
Nano. The 6G again is a great product on its own but once again, the 6G is just a
glorified touchscreen shuffle. Apple you blew this one.

Thomas Wolf presents DigiGems to turn the 6th generation iPod Nano into a work of wearable art. Try it as a tie clip, bracelet, broach or cockade for your favorite hat while albums of Wolfwerk images move across the screen. Mary Moffitt uses the nano as a modern pendant on a silver chain. Download any or all of the 31 Wolfwerk DigiGem albums into iPhoto and sync to the iPod Nano using iTunes.
