For those hoping to get their check or direct deposit as soon as possible, the irs.gov website will have information available approximately 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your e-filed return, or three to four weeks after mailing a paper return.
How do you use the "Where's My Refund" online tool on irs.gov? Enter your Social Security Number, filing status and the exact amount of your refund. If you haven't filed your taxes yet, there are a variety of online filing sites available including Turbo Tax and H&R Block at Home. Certain filers will qualify for free e-filing. What information is not available on the "Where's My Refund" site? You cannot track refunds that are claimed on amended tax returns or business returns.
If you need to reference the information at a later date, your refund information will remain available online on the irs.gov website until around the second or third week in December 2012.
