Bike rentals are so last season. On a cold winter day like today, snowshoes are perfect for hotel guests. At the Radisson Blu Aqua, they go to extraordinary lengths to cater to a guest’s every imaginable need. This winter season the concierge is carrying snow shoes available to guests.
There’s no charge and no limit on rental period. On a cold winter day like today, guests can enjoy Northerly Island (close proximity to the hotel) by snowshoeing around the island to look for winter birds, winter native animals, or enjoy the incredible view of Chicago’s skyline!
This column is about adventure travel, so you will usually not see an article about hotel amenities; however, many hotels realize that many travelers, even luxury ones, want a little adventure with their fitness rooms, spas, and swimming pools.
The Chicago Marathon sold spaces so quickly that their system crashed, The American Birkebeiner cross-country ski Marathon in Hayward, Wisconsin has sold out earlier and earlier each year, and sports like kayaking, surfing, scuba diving increase in popularity each year. All of these instances show a trend in people wanting more adventure.
It is nice to see luxury hotels like the Radisson Blu Aqua accommodating to these adventurous needs of their guests. Everyone thinks you have to sleep in a tent and brave mosquitoes and wild animals to have adventure. While I recommend these types of trips, I realize these activities do not appeal to everyone.
For those that want to sleep in a comfortable bed and eat civilized food, there are still opportunities to have adventure and then live in the lap of luxury. Chicago has plenty of options for this including kayaking the Chicago River, renting a bike to do the Lakeshore Trail, and now snowshoe Northerly Island.
