Upon initial glance, tackling Portland’s selection of over 600 food carts clustered in "pods" all around PDX seems daunting. We're talking a foodie scene that has moved way beyond serving pretzels and hot togs to offering flavorful dishes ranging from Africa to Malibu.
But thanks to Portland Walking Tours, one can target some of the trucks featuring the best nibbles around. Led by a Resident Expert (aka personal tour guide), this trek will highlight the best of those foods that are floss (food that is fresh, local, organic, seasonal, sustainable). Learn which carts are worth the wait and where one should skip the block long queues.
In under two hours, the guide will escort the group through two pods located in downtown Portland and sample a total of 10 food carts. During one tour, the guide started at the 9th and Adler Street pod where guests sampled offerings from the Dump Truck, el Taco Yucatero, Korean Twist, Aybla Grill, Altengartz, Kargi Gogo, and Steak Your Claim. Then the guide went over to the 3rd Avenue pod to sample the wares from Salmon Fusion, Cultured Caveman and All Jarred Up.
These tours set out every Friday and Saturday at 1pm. As the tours are limited to 3 to 14 people, the group can easily nosh down and then move out without the long waits that come with booking a larger more commercialized tour. Due to the small size of the group, buy tickets in advance when possible via their website.
The tours costs $49.00 though when purchasing the ticket click "Add to Basket" to unlock frequent web specials.
