Las Vegas can see the second season of the fantasy series Legend of the Seeker starting this Saturday at 7pm on Channel 3. Loosely based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels, this season depicts the events from the second novel, Stone of Tears. Seeker Richard Cypher, played by Craig Horner, discovers more about himself than he would like in this season, even as he deals with the consequences of his climatic battle with villainous ruler Darken Rahl, played by Craig Parker (Lord of the Rings, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans).
Bridget Regan (Sex and the City, The Best and the Brightest) returns as the powerful Confessor Kahlan while Tabrett Bethel joins the regular cast as Cara, the Mord-Sith who helped Richard dispatch Darken Rahl in the first season. A bath scene and a guest appearance by Buffy and Angel’s Charisma Carpenter bring red leather clad sexual tension to this episode.
My personal favorite, Bruce Spence (LotR: The Return of the King and the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader) gives the series heart as the wizard Zedd, who guides Richard on his path as the Seeker even as he discovers some unsettling truths of his own.
The series continues using the gorgeous New Zealand landscape in its filming, with costuming and production design several cuts above the various mediocre fantasy series and mini-series that have come over the years. TV fantasy does not yet have a Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica, but Legend of the Seeker tries, and shows the possibility (and desirability) of a big budget fantasy series that doesn’t blow every penny on one FX shot.
Newcomers should give Legend of the Seeker a try, viewing what episodes they can on Hulu, as well as recaps and teasers here. There is enough out there to catch up and make diving right into the new season possible, and worthwhile. For non-Las Vegans, look for local time and channel here.
So check out Legend of the Seeker this Saturday night!
