Check out Andre Benjamin as Jimi Hendrix in trailer for Jimi: All Is by My Side

The film was directed by Academy Award winner John Ridley (“12 Years a Slave”), who also wrote the film’s screenplay. “Jimi: All Is by My Side” covers Hendrix’s life between 1966 and 1967, when he went from being an unknown backup singer at New York Cheetah’s Club to garnering fame in London and to the Monterey Pop triumph.

Since this takes place before his “Are You Experienced?” album, fans of Hendrix’s music won’t hear Benjamin cover that song, “Fire,” or any other hits, since the filmmakers didn’t get permission to use the songs, according to a report from Rolling Stone. But you will hear Benjamin as Hendrix cover songs from The Beatles, Muddy Waters, and others.

The trailer starts by showing the London scene, where Hendrix got recognized, and some of the events he went through before shooting to stardom. It then transcends into the acclaim the film has been receiving from Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and other publications.

And as Hendrix starts to get noticed, his girlfriend, Linda Keith (portrayed by Imogen Potts), wonders if he’ll “notice” that she’s not around anymore. There are also some clips of Benjamin performing some of the classic beats of Hendrix.

And when you hear Benjamin say a few lines of dialogue, he sounds eerily similar to the rock icon himself. It’s amazing to see how he has transformed to take on this role.

“Jimi: All Is by My Side” also stars Hayley Atwell; Burn Gorman; Ruth Negga: and Ashley Charles. The film is rated R for “language including sexual references, and drug use.”
