Check out a book online for free - Literature, fiction, self-help, romance

Internet users don't have to walk into a local bookstore to scan the shelves for a good read. Instead, several online sites provide free book excerpts and welcome feedback from you when you're done, if you have the time.

Createspace, an Amazon.com company, is one such online site that offers potential customers and book fans the chance to scour their book preview gallery for free. But checking out the book isn't like a library loan, as you are only getting to visually see a portion of the book for free; not the whole book.

As of Feb. 7, 2012 the books available for preview include more than 1,600 literary and fiction novels and 886 mysteries and thrillers--including this article author's crime fiction preview Ali Brown Criminal Profiler Series.

There's also free previews of self-help books, history books, science fiction and fantasy as well as nonfiction books and books on children and parenting.

Some previews are very short, with others providing a large portion of the book online at no charge. While there is no requirement or payment expectation of those who utilize the service, it is hoped that participants will either rate the book (between 1 to 5 stars) or leave more detailed comments for the author.
