CHEAP SAFE WAY TO UNCLOG SINK DRAINS

See also

Bathroom sink drains are constantly clogging up with hair, oil & dirt. If it becomes necessary to call a plumber to unclog your drains, it can be unpleasantly expensive. So, if you are on a budget, or would rather spend your money on better things than a plumber, there are a couple of inexpensive, non chemical suggestions that I can pass along.

The first suggestion is an amazing little tool called, “Zip It”. It can be purchased at Home Depot for about $2.00 and it works like magic. It is a long (about 15”) narrow plastic strip with jagged edges on both sides. Holding the “Zip It” from the top of the strip, you insert the strip down the bathroom sink and pull it back up. You will probably be shocked by the amount of hair and gunk you will retrieve from each insertion. A word of caution, be careful removing the gunk that is attached to the “Zip It”, the edges are pointy.

Second suggestion, you can unclog and protect your drain pipes as well as our environment by choosing to use non chemical drain cleaners. Once your pipes become eroded through the use of abrasive drain cleaners, such as Draino, Liquid Plummer and the like, the cost of replacing the pipes are astronomical. Instead of harsh drain cleaners, you may want to try using a very effective combination of Baking Soda and White Vinegar. The reaction of this mixture is like that of a non-explosive volcano; it will foam, bubble and fizz, which indicates that the baking soda and vinegar is working.

If there is standing water that does not drain, use a drain plunger (the one that is flat on the bottom) first.

How to Unclog A Drain With Baking Soda and Vinegar:

• Dump about 1/2 cup (or ½ box) baking soda.

• Then, pour in 1 cup of white vinegar

• If possible, cover the drain with a stopper or plug (to keep the reaction down below the drain surface) and let it sit for 5-15 minutes.

• Flush the drain with a pot of boiling water.

NOTE: It is not advisable to try to premix or store the Baking Soda/Vinegar mixture, it will not be effective. Many plumbers recommend using the Baling Soda/Vinegar mixture regularly to keep all your drains fresh and free flowing. It also works great in garbage disposals.
