Cheap Date Idea: Surprise candlelight lunch

A wonderful surprise!
A wonderful surprise!
William Thrasher

Here's a wonderfully romantic Cheap Date Idea...if you can pull it off.

Last week, I came home to discover Will standing next to our dinner table lighting the last of six assorted candles. He just so happened to know about what time I was going to be home for lunch that day and thus set about putting together a delicious lunch comprised of nothing more than left overs from a couple of meals we had over the previous weekend.

Saturday night's left over ribs sat next to Sunday night's corn on the cob and rolls. Will had even created a non-alcoholic mixed drink out of the last of some juice and club soda. The candles were some we have just sitting around the house (I love candles. There will always be candles where ever I happen to live).

He didn't spend a dime and yet I found my heart fluttering and there was a huge cheesy grin on my face for the rest of the day. As a matter of fact, I snapped a picture with my cell phone and proceeded to make all of my coworkers jealous at the thoughtfulness of my amazingly wonderful boyfriend.

And who doesn't love being gushed over?

What the meal is made of doesn't really matter all that much. It's the surprise that means the most in this Cheap Date Idea. If all you have in your kitchen are the fixings for peanut butter and jelly, then by all means, go for a candlelight PB&J lunch with your love.

If you aren't lucky enough to have access to your loved one's home, try meeting them in the parking lot with a picnic basket instead! Most places have some area where there's grass you could feasibly sit on. Just make sure that you're beyond the point in your relationship where this twist might be considered creepy.

If you don't have the necessary candle(s) at home, I've found that either Walmart or Meijer out in Hamburg Pavilion tend to have some of the bigger and cheaper selections. As you can see in the picture, Will recycled an empty Coke bottle (and he later added a candle to the empty wine bottle as well) for a candle holder.

Cost: A little bit of detective work to find out what your sweetheart's lunch plans are and maybe a couple of bucks for a candle.
