Cheap Christmas gifts: Gingerbread cookie recipe

Give the gift of an easy gingerbread cookie recipe to those you love in a lovely, layered jar. These make great cheap Christmas gifts for large stocking stuffer items or for a not-often-seen family member. This gingerbread cookie recipe in a jar is also great for using when you want to make gingerbread ornaments or if you want to encourage others to start a sweet, family tradition. 
 
What you’ll need: 
 
  • 1 quart canning jar with lid
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1tsp. Allspice
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Step 1: Combine 2 cups of flour with baking soda and baking powder. Pour into the bottom of the canning jar. 
 
Step 2: Pour brown sugar into jar. 
 
Step 3: Mix together remaining ingredients and pour into the jar. 
 
Step 4: Put the lid on and attach a card with the directions below. 
 
Tips: Tap the bottom of the jar against the counter after you add each layer. This will pack the gingerbread cookie recipe tightly and ensure there’s room for all the ingredients.

Step 1: Pour contents into large mixing bowl. 
 
Step 2: Add 1/2 cup butter, 3/4 cup molasses and 1 egg. Use an electric beater to mix the ingredients thoroughly. The gingerbread cookie recipe may toughen up and require hand mixing to finish. 
 
Step 3: Cover and refrigerate 2 hours.
