Next time you are having a party, there is no need to spend lots of money on a special tablecloth. You can make a tablecloth quickly and easily using items you already have in your home. Or if you want something fancy for a special occasion or holiday, you can save money by shopping for an alternative tablecloth that will be more beautiful than any tablecloth you can buy.

For kids parties, you can cover any table with newspaper. Then let the children take turns reading what is near their plate. Or if you want a fun activity tablecloth, cover the paper with butcher paper or brown paper bags that you cut open and give the children crayons. Let them decorate the tablecloth with their own art!

Another idea for a cheap and easy tablecloth is to use a shower curtain liner. You can get them in many colors at the dollar store. And for only a buck, after using it you can toss it in the trash. If you want to save it, you can toss it in the wash with a bed sheet. Then dry both the sheet and shower curtain liner on low heat. Check it often as you don't want it to get too hot. It will come out super clean and ready to fold and put away for the next time.

If you want a very festive tablecloth, you can cover your table with wrapping paper. This can be a bit more costly, but if you shop in the dollar stores you should find some nice rolls of wrapping paper to dress up your table.

You can also shop for cheap fabric to use as a tablecloth. Sometimes you can get fabric for as little as 50 cents a yard on clearance. If you know how to sew, you can hem the edges of the tablecloth so it won't fray when washing it. If you don't know how to sew, don't worry about it.  Just cut the tablecloth to size and leave the hems unfinished.

If you want a very unusual tablecloth, you can buy a cheap piece of artificial grass. That is a great way to turn an indoor party into an "outdoor" festivity! And you don't even need a table. Just put the artificial grass on the floor and have a picnic. It's a fun way to share a family meal and there are no ants!

Local Shopping Tip:  If you live in Sanford, you can find cheap fabric at Marden's Surplus. With their fabric, you can make yourself a tablecloth to fit any occasion or theme. They have lots of prints with all the popular cartoon characters that kids will love. Marden's is located at 1247 Main Street in Sanford. You can also check out the Dollar Tree which is in the Center for Shopping in South Sanford.
