The return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) happens this Saturday, Sept. 28 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Chavez will face Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KOs), a rangy fighter blessed with great skill. The Super Middleweight bout is being promoted by Top Rank, in association with Banner Promotions and Zanfer Promotions, and televised on HBO World Championship Boxing at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.
The fight is not without controversy however, a dispute over the weight could be increased to 173 pounds, up from 168 pounds which was the contracted weight agreed upon.
According to ESPN, the fight has been reduced from a scheduled 12-round bout to a 10-round bout.
At today's press conference in Los Angeles, Vera said, "It has been the longest camp I have ever been in, so I'm not lying when I say I am in the best shape of my career." Although Chavez Jr. has not fought in a year, Vera knows he will have to be fit and ready to fight when faces the son of a Mexican legend.
For Chavez, this bout will be a good test of his skills, any ring rust must be dealt with early. Chavez Jr. said at yesterday's press conference, "I am very happy that fight night is coming soon. I think it's going to be a great fight for the audience, You are going to see the best Julio you have ever seen."
