Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KOs) on the scorecards last night in Carson, California at the StubHub Center, the featured bout was presented by Top Rank in association with Zanfer Promotions, and televised on HBO World Championship Boxing.
For Vera, his performance was stellar and nothing to be ashamed about. He fought a fight he deserved to win, with all the controversy over the weight limit, Vera proved himself in the ring and most true boxing fans agree.
The more active Vera had Chavez Jr. beat on the punch rate, and it was apparent that Chavez Jr. had some ring rust issues.
Without a doubt, Chavez Jr. was the stronger of the two, but the more busy Vera landed the more effective shots. Vera did a nice job working his combinations to the head and body of Chavez Jr., often backing him up and getting the attention of Chavez Jr.
In the end, the judges score the bout in favor of Chavez Jr,, 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94. Although it was a non-title fight, most see Vera as the clear winner of this fight.
For Chavez Jr., it has been reported that he will again work with Freddy Roach. One thing is certain, Chavez Jr. is a solid fighter, he will always be in the shadow of his father, but he must take this game seriously and live up to the name given to him if he plans on becoming half the legend of his father.
