WBC middleweight king Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. retained his crown against fellow Mexican countryman “The Poison” Marco Antonio Rubio with a unanimous decision victory last night in front of 14,120 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Chavez (45-0-1-1, 31 KOs), whose nickname is "The Legend Goes On" because he is the son of iconic pugilist Julio Caesar Chavez, battered Rubio (53-6-1, 46 KOs) with a heavy assortment of blows throughout the 12-round bout.
Chavez, who struggled to make weight for the scrap and was arrested on drunken driving charges January 22 in Los Angeles, told ESPN.com he wasn’t impressed with his 31-year-old opponent.
"He wasn't as tough as I thought he would be," said Chavez, 25, who turned professional after only two fights as an amateur. "I felt good about myself the whole fight. I felt a lot stronger than him. He never hurt me in the fight. I felt his punches, but he never hurt me."
Rubio admitted he couldn’t physically compete with the native of Culiacan.
"He was too heavy for me," Rubio said. "I couldn't handle his weight. It was body to body. It was too much for me to handle."
Freddie Roach, a native of Dedham (Mass.) who was voted Trainer of the Year on four occasions by the Boxing Writers Association of America, has helped refine and hone Chavez’s abilities since he was signed to train him last year.
Still, perhaps unfairly because of whom his father is, many analysts have been largely unimpressed to date with the undefeated Chavez.
"Chavez has a great record," said Roger "Pit" Perron, 73, a respected boxing trainer from Brockton (Mass.) who now works with Mike and Rich Cappiello at their gym, Cappiello Brothers Boxing and Training. "But, he doesn't impress me that much."
Perron eventually softened his stance against Chavez.
"But, any fighter Freddie Roach pays attention to has to be good."
Chavez was simply impressive in the squared circle against Rubio and, at least for the time being, "The Legend Goes On."
