What city has the most Bible knowledge? Chattanooga, Tennessee according to one recent study.
The Barna Group in partnership with the American Bible Society released its findings concerning Bible reading and knowledge in the top 100 metropolitan areas in the United States. The study, ‘America’s Most (and Least) Bible-Minded Cities,’ released in January 2014, offers a geographical portrait of how various U.S. cities know the Bible.
The top 5 Bible-minded cities are:
1. Chattanooga, TN
2. Birmingham / Anniston / Tuscaloosa, AL
3. Roanoke / Lynchburg, VA
4. Springfield, MO
5. Shreveport, LA
The least-minded Bible city according to the report was Providence, RI / New Bedford, MA (100) followed by Albany / Schenectady / Troy, NY (99).
A similar study completed in 2012 showed another city in Tennessee—Knoxville, as the most-Bible minded city. 2013 winner Chattanooga was third. Providence RI / New Bedford, MA again was the least-minded in 2012 ranking last of 96 U.S. areas.
While not mentioning specifics, the report noted that, “even in one year, the spiritual climate has notably shifted.”
The 2013 report was based on random telephone and online interviews with 46,274 adults in the U.S. conducted over a seven-year period ending in August 2013.
