Charlotte top fundraiser in troops campaign

A marsupial mascot store chain and a World War II jeep are pulling in some good money for the troops this summer. Kangaroo Express convenience stores, across 13 states, kicked off its "Salute Our Troops" campaign on Memorial Day, while USO's refurbished Willy jeep zigzagged the Southeast firing up grassroots support.

Thus far, the combined efforts have raised over $1.35 million for the coffers of USO, Wounded Warrior Project and other military service organizations.  Charlotte, North Carolina stores are the top performers, raising more than $225,000.

"Charlotte is number one for raising funds; it says a lot about this community," says USO-NC board member and Silver Star recipient Army Sergeant Tommy Rieman.

One Of America's Real Heroes

Rieman has served his nation for over 12 years and is now assigned to the Virginia Army National Guard D co 1/116th Infantry.

In 2004, he received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for 'acts of conspicuous gallantry and courage under fire' when his team was ambushed while on a reconnaissance mission in Iraq.

He was later selected as one of the heroes of "America's Army Real Heroes" program.

Rieman was recognized by President George W. Bush during the 2007 State of the Union Address:

"He was shot in the chest and arm, and received shrapnel wounds to his legs - yet he refused medical attention, and stayed in the fight."

Rieman is involved in several home front endeavors, and he says, "It's all about giving back."  He is breaking cover on future plans with Kangaroo Express.  "We want to build a coalition of brands to address the needs of returning servicemen.  Thousands are coming back... we need to be ready for them."

Meet Rieman And Donate To The Cause

On August 30th, Rieman will be at Charlotte's Rea Road Kangaroo Express working as an employee for the day.  Stop by, fill up your tank, grab some Bean Street coffee, and meet a real hero behind one of the cash registers... "Hi ma'am! Would you like to donate a dollar?"
