Charlotte Senior Citizens: It's never Too Late to get in Shape

The benefits of regular exercise are huge and it is never too late to reap the rewards.  Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that we all have to age, but it's also true that we can age rather gracefully if we choose.  The latest research shows that regular exercise at any age-not only helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers, but it also burns calories, gives you energy, relieves stress, helps you sleep better and improves strength and balance.

Don't know where to start?  The easiest way to get started is to just take a walk around your neighborhood.  Try to walk at a pretty brisk pace for 20 - 30 minutes.  This is a great way to give your heart the cardio attention it needs.  Don't forget to sit and stretch the back of your legs when you return back home.  Reach for your toes, keeping your spine straight and leaning forward with your chest, not your head.

Join a group exercise program designed especially for senior citizens.  Fortunately, Charlotte has many classes to offer throughout the city.   One of the best ways to work your whole body with little stress to the joints is to exercise in the water.  The Levine JCC offers an Arthritis Aquatic Program twice a week and the YMCA's have many aqua exercise programs as well.

Why not start aging gracefully now?  30 minutes of moderate exercise a day is all you need to keep your brain sharp, your heart pumping and your life energized.
