McDowell Nature Preserve is tucked away in the southwestern-most corner of Charlotte, situated beside Lake Wylie. This green area, a perfect haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all types, contains over 1,100 acres of forest and ample recreation opportunities for the whole family. There are: nine easy to moderate hiking trails covering seven miles of terrain, including the Four Seasons trail, which is paved and fully accessible (click here for a trail map); a total of 56 campsites (click here for a campground map); a playground; and picnic shelters, some of which are lakeside.
Picnic areas, restrooms, and parking lots are all available throughout the park. There is also a nature center onsite, open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday from 1pm-5pm.
