Charlotte Knights to don 1990 retro jerseys to mark final season in Fort Mill

In a little more than two months the Charlotte Knights will begin their 24th and final home season in Fort Mill, South Carolina before they move into their new state of the art ballpark in uptown Charlotte. As a way of looking back at the history of the team at Knights Stadium, the team announced today that they will wear jerseys from their inaugural season in 1990.

In a season long promotion dubbed Flashback Fridays, the Knights will wear the black tops with Carolina Blue letters with white numbers pinstripes and purple piping. The Knights made their debut at Knights Stadium as the Class-AA Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

“With this being our final year at Knights Stadium, we want to celebrate some of the best years in this stadium’s rich 24-year history,” said Knights General Manager of Baseball Operations Scott Brown. “The 1990’s were a special decade at Knights Stadium. Our team made their debut at Knights Stadium in 1990, won their first Governors’ Cup championship in 1993, and added another championship in 1999, just before the end of the decade. We plan to have a flashback theme throughout the entire series.”

There are ten Friday night home contests on the Nights 2013 regular season schedule and each will feature either a special throwback giveaway or a celebrity guest appearance. Three of the giveaways will be throwback hats featuring a different retro logo. One of the hats will feature the 1994-96 Knights logo. A throwback 1990 pennant and retro team card sets are also among the giveaway items set to be handed out this season.

The Knights, who are currently the White Sox top minor league affiliate in the International League, finished the 1990 season with an overall 65-79 record managed by Jay Loviglio and Tommy Helms. They would move up in class in 1993 as the Indians’ Triple-A team that went on to win the International League title under skipper Charlie Manuel who has had a successful run as the field general of the Phillies. In 1999, they gave their parent White Sox a title with Tom Spencer at the helm.
