Charlize Theron wows at 39: Anti-aging weight loss tips are yoga and Pilates

Charlize Theron said she embraces aging because she's a lot wiser and more confident at 39 than she was during her twenties.

"It's ironic that we've built the beauty world around 20-year-olds, when they have no f--kin' concept about wisdom, what life is about, having a few relationships below [their] belt and feeling hardships," Theron told WWD Aug. 26.

Theron said she believes women really come into their own in their forties, and said it's a shame women are considered less attractive as they get older, while men are seen as more attractive in their later years.

"People say women come into their prime in their 40s," said Charlize. "And then for some reason, our society just wants to go, 'It's like a dead flower.' It's like we wilt for some reason. And men are like fine wines — the older they get, the better they get. It's such a misconception, and it's such a lost opportunity because that's when I think women are really in the true moment of their sensuality."

Of course, when you're a blonde bombshell like Theron, age doesn't exactly fade your beauty. Charlize, who was a stunner at 20 and remains one at 39, famously gained 30 pounds and underwent an extreme "make-under" to look like a bloated, alcoholic serial killer for the 2003 drama "Monster."

Weight Loss Secrets Include Yoga and Pilates

Charlize, who won a best actress Academy Award for her work, lost the weight in record time, thanks to her disciplined diet and rigorous workouts that included yoga, Pilates, and lots of hiking.

Theron is reportedly a fan of hot yoga, and was recently photographed taking a hot yoga class in her native Cape Town, South Africa. Other fans of hot yoga include singer Pink and actor Chris Pratt, who credited hot yoga, CrossFit and a low carb Paleo style diet for his 80-pound weight loss.

"I’m sure there are women who never have to worry about what they eat, but I do," Theron told Vogue. "I exercise a lot, and I hike a lot."

While weight loss is hard for most people, Theron has gained and lost weight many times over the years for film roles, and said she enjoys the physical and mental challenges that come with her job.

"I’ve had to gain a lot of weight for movies, I’ve had to drop weight really fast for movies. I’ve had to learn accents or embody physical behaviors or twitches and things like that. That’s the challenge of the job. That’s why I like my job so much, because at the end of the day they’re fruits of labor that you don’t pick very easily. And I love that. I like hard work."

Despite being hailed as a sex symbol her entire career, Theron said she is not obsessed with staying young and beautiful and credited her mother Gerda for instilling in her proper values that eschewed superficiality. Theron is the mother of a two-year-old adopted African-American boy, Jackson, and is reportedly engaged to actor Sean Penn.
