New photos show Charlize Theron and her son, Jackson, taking time together to do some shopping at Whole Foods in Hollywood. The photos appeared in a Feb. 28 story on the DailyMail.com. The two shopped happily, with Jackson often tucked protectively in his mother's arms.
Jackson, who recently celebrated his first birthday, joined Charlize's family via adoption in March 2012. Charlize eagerly embraced motherhood, although her role as a single mom wasn't something she'd always planned on.
"You, know, I don't think any mother aims to be a single mom. I didn't wish for that, but it happened," she explained shortly after Jackson's arrival. Regardless, she seems to have happily settled into the role of doting mother. She balances that role with her successful Hollywood career; her most recent Hollywood activity was her on-stage dancing with Channing Tatum at this year's Academy Awards.
Theron's transracial family reflects the makeup of a growing number of U.S. families that have been created through transracial adoption. Upwards of 40 percent of U.S. adoptions are transracial. Domestic adoption, foster care adoption and international adoption all have contributed to the rise in transracial adoptions.
