Charlie Sheen's arrest for domestic violence Christmas day may point to an old problem that once caused his father Martin to call the police on him.
In 1998, Charlie was hospitalized for a drug overdose, and has been battling addiction for a long time. HIs father turned him in to the police in order to get him into a rehabilitation program.
Charlie Sheen is a recovering alcoholic, but it looks like he relapsed, especially with the Breathalyzer test done by law enforcement, and his arrest for domestic violence.
Reports indicate that both Charlie, and Brook Mueller, the alleged victim, blew blood alcohol levels of .04 and .13 respectively. Charlie had a very slight buzz, and Brooke may have been tipsy. However, Charlie shouldn't even be drinking due to his previous problems with the sauce.
The United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics indicates that between 2001-2005, 42% of non-fatal intimate partner violence involved alcohol or drugs.
In America, a female is beaten down by her intimate partner every 15 seconds according to D.G. Dutton in: Aggression and Violence Throughout the Lifespan. Newbury Park, CA: Sage Publications, 1992. pp. 192-221. In addition, domestic violence is likely to contribute to the victim's use of alcohol and/or drugs to deal with the abuse.
If Charlie Sheen has relapsed on alcohol, it is still no excuse for beating down your partner, if in fact he did so. Reports now indicate a knife was involved in the attack which would raise the charge to Felony Menacing. Charlie was also involved in shooting his former love interest Kelly Preston if you remember.
Looks like Charlie Sheen is in need of some serious intervention again if these allegations prove to be true. However, there are reports that Brooke was a crackhead, and has been in treatment for the problem, so maybe it takes two to tango with this pair.
