Universal Pictures released a statement saying, “The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
Hunnam stars on FX’s hit show ‘Sons of Anarchy‘, which just began airing it’s 6th season on September 10.
There are rumors circulating that contrary to Unviversal Pictures statement, Hunnam got ‘cold feet’ and dropped out. Matt Belloni, an executive editor at The Hollywood Reporter, tweeted:
2 sources now say Hunnam got cold feet on #50Shades movie, TV schedule said to have had nothing to do with his exit.

Hunnam has recently been talking about how he’s going to do his best to prepare for the role, but now looks like he won’t have the time to do so. He recently released spoke to Entertainment Weekly and said, “I’m taking it very seriously and intend to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him -- and also dress up nice and look good in those suits.”
There had been a backlash from the fans, criticizing Hunnam as the choice for the lead role. They felt he wasn’t right for the role and didn’t look the part.
No other actors are being considered at the moment, but it’s clear that the studios are going to do their best to cast the right man for this role in a timely manner. The studios will be looking to keep their August 2014 premiere date, but the filmmakers don’t want to rush in picking a replacement.
What do you think of the news of Hunnam dropping out of the role?
