Charlie Askew's 'Mama' leads to emotional moment on 'American Idol' (Photos)

Charlie Askew gave a surprising performance on "American Idol" Wednesday night.

Performing a rendition of "Mama," with a completely unexpected look, including a sleeveless shirt and an earring, Askew stunned the panel of judges.

"You have a huge range Charlie. You could front a band doing your own thing," Keith Urban shared before admitting that his performance did not feel as genuine. "There's a thing about the way that you're performing. To me it felt disconnected."

Upset with Charlie Askew, Nicki Minaj agreed with Keith Urban.

"Last time I saw you I wanted to cradle you in my arms. Where's my baby at Charlie? I feel like someone stole my kid. I don't want to see your arms. I don't want you to work out. Charlie, seriously I want my cute cuddly Charlie back," said Minaj. "Now it's like darker. I don't know what's going on. I'm upset."

While he was not upset, Randy Jackson was a little worried for Charlie Askew.

"I don't think I'm upset. I think I'm worried. Honestly the front part was terrible. The beginning was really, really terrible," said Jackson. In the end, you went to a scream. I didn't connect for me at all tonight."

Clearly hurt by what each judge said, Charlie Askew nearly broke down in tears as he spoke to Ryan Seacrest after the performance. He then admitted to faking his smile because he thought that was what people wanted to see from him.

After seeing his performance, did you agree with the judges or were they too hard on Charlie Askew?

"American Idol" returns Thursday night on FOX.
