Charlie Askew falls apart on 'American Idol' after harsh criticism from judges (Photos)

When Charlie Askew walked onto the “American Idol” stage on Wednesday in a pony tail, tank top and wearing an earring, a captivated audience waited breathlessly for his performance.

Askew’s song choice was “Mama” by Genesis. Fascinating to watch, he revealed a darker side as he sang and screamed his way through the song, obviously giving it his all.

Take a look at the video below of Charlie Askew performing "Mama."

Not impressed, the judges had some harsh criticism for the singer. Nicki Minaj said, "Last time I saw you I wanted to cradle you in my arms. Where's my baby at Charlie? I feel like someone stole my kid. I don't want to see your arms. I don't want you to work out. Charlie, seriously I want my cute cuddly Charlie back. Now it's like darker. I don't know what's going on. I'm upset."

Randy Jackson add his two cents, "I don't think I'm upset. I think I'm worried. Honestly the front part was terrible. The beginning was really, really terrible. In the end, you went to a scream. I didn't connect for me at all tonight."

Askew was visibly upset as Ryan Seacrest joined him on stage. Seemingly on the verge of tears, Seacrest did his best to comfort the 17-year-old "American Idol" contestant.

What do you think of Askew’s performance? Do you think the judges’ critiques were too harsh?
